You will drive 2 hours in the pouring rain to watch your daughter’s soccer game. You will wake up at 3 a.m. to give your baby another bottle. You will sacrifice time, money, and so much energy to make your child feel loved and cared for. But are you doing everything you can to protect them while they are in the car? A car accident is always a nightmare, but what about when you have your children in the car? It is every parent’s worst fear. Car accidents can result in serious injury or worse for child passengers. Unfortunately, car crashes are a leading cause of death for children. How can we better protect our children while doing something as simple as riding in the car? This Child Passenger Safety Week, we are sharing potentially life-saving tips for keeping your child safe while they are a passenger in a car.
What Is Child Passenger Safety Week?
Child Passenger Safety Week was created by the United States Department of Transportation to shed light on the risks and preventable measures a parent or caregiver can take to ensure the safety of a child while riding in a vehicle. 374 child passengers were injured every single day in 2019. In that same year, 608 child passengers died. The need to ensure that your child is secured properly in the correct car seat for their age, weight, and height has never been greater.
What Can You Do?
Do your research!
It’s very important to look into and adhere to government regulations for child passengers. We also encourage you to go a step further and research manufacturers and safety ratings on various kinds of car seats and booster seats. Find something that makes you feel comfortable and is full of safety features backed by science and testing.
Find the right size car seat or booster seat
Did you know that using a car seat reduces a child’s risk of injury in a crash by 71-82%? This is why it’s important to make sure your child is in the proper car seat for their age, height, and weight.
Read the instructions
This one may seem like a given, but you would be surprised by how many people do not read the instructions on their child’s car seat or booster seat. We know it is tedious to read them cover to cover, but inside, you will find tons of information about how to set up your child’s safety seat and customize the features it provides to best suit your needs. You’ll find information on how to properly secure the seat, how to properly buckle in your child, and how to best utilize the features of your specific seat which will provide the safest possible experience for your child passenger.
A parent’s love and commitment is like nothing else in the whole world! We know that you would do anything for your child, so do this too. Commit to giving them the safest possible experience as a passenger in the car.
