Cat Wars

Living in a household with multiple pets can be rewarding but not without challenges. It’s true that living with nine cats is like living with nine teenage girls – it’s all smiles one second and all claws the next. Cats are territorial and when one of their housemates steps into their area uninvited, the catfight begins! There is nothing like being woke up in the middle of the night by the screeches of cats getting ready to rumble. Sometimes the stress is overwhelming to the cats, which can cause bad behaviors like marking their territory or destroying your furniture. By relieving the stress, your household can be all smiles again.

One way to alleviate the stress is to give your cats several areas to call their own. This may mean setting up two or three feeding stations or putting litter boxes in a couple different rooms in your home. They won’t have to wait their turn and they can get away from more aggressive kitty. Also, make sure there are plenty of toys available so they might play to release some energy instead of picking on their housemates. If the situation is extremely stressful for one of your cats, there are products on the market that claim to help. One item is a device that plugs into an outlet and dispenses pheromones into the air at regular intervals. Pheromones are chemicals that control social behavior and are believed to be a stress-reliever for cats. We are trying one of these dispensers at home and I’ll report back on the results.

A happy cat-filled home is achievable with a little planning and a lot of TLC.
