How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Healthy
What is Heartworm Disease in Dogs?
Heartworm disease is a serious condition caused by parasitic worms living in the arteries of the lungs and occasionally in the right side of the heart. If left untreated, it is fatal.
It is spread by mosquitoes, and every dog is at risk. Over 300,000 dogs are diagnosed with heartworms each year.
Signs and Symptoms
Infected dogs may show signs of persistent coughing, fatigue after moderate exercise, reduced appetite, and weight loss.
Heartworm disease is preventable. The prevention is much less expensive than the treatment. It is very important to test your dog once a year. It is just a simple blood test. Puppies should start preventative measures at 6 to 8 weeks of age.
I worked for an animal hospital for many years and saw first hand what these poor animals had to endure when they came down with a terrible illness. I think we owe it to our furry friends to keep them happy and healthy.
